The King of Asia Drift Exhibition Series will be the last event to be held at Speedcity in Kuala Lumpur. The venue, well known for hosting motorsports events for the past few years, will make way for development of either condos or office blocks.
So it is quite fitting for Speedcity to hold this new drift series, exhibition it may be, as its’ last hurrah. Motorsports in Malaysia has lost another venue and a drifter whom I spoke to appeared to be quite sad that he and other drifters have to look for a new playground. But let’s get back to talking about photography before I sidetrack more (or try to add padding to my post).
This is the first motorsports event that I shot in RAW format. Crazy right?
The main benefit of shooting in RAW is the ability to edit the colours in Lightroom or any other software without losing much details and colour data. The downside is you will be shooting with bigger file sizes, more buffer to clear on your camera and many other inconveniences. Oh yeah, and there will be not a lot of files but it will still take up a lot of hard disk space compared to JPEG.
So why the hell did I shoot this event in RAW? Well, a photographer from a well known motoring website shot the Formula Drift series in RAW. I wanted to see if this works for me. And after spending a few hours of shooting and editing in RAW I would say ‘No’ to shooting RAW for motorsports. Unless I am the official photographer.
The way Hypertune works is that event write-up will have very short stories and lots of photos. The photos on the pages will be very small. The colour reproduction from the printer isn’t consistent and the paper used isn’t high grade premium paper. Whatever details I can get from my Canon 5D MKIII RAW files wouldn’t show up that nicely anyway, so shooting JPEG for events, at least for me, is the way to go.
